Food Sensitivities or Intolerances affect almost everyone and create a wide variety of chronic conditions. In a very simple explanation, food intolerances trigger inflammation anywhere in our bodies, depending on our individual health history and genetic makeup. Not only do we all react to different foods, but the reactions affect different parts of our bodies and can range from mild to severe.
I highly recommend a specific blood test, called the ALCAT (Antigen Leukocyte Cellular Antibody Test), which measures the reactions of your white blood cells to specific foods. The test evaluates your degree of reaction as severe, moderate, mild, or none.
The ALCAT is different than traditional allergy tests, which measure a specific immediate chemical reaction, commonly referred to as an IgE response. The ALCAT will identify many immune system responses that can occur from hours to even days after consuming a specific food. The information from this test is extremely valuable in the treatment of chronic conditions. There is a chapter (beginning on page 89) in my book, Your Inner Pharmacy (Add to Cart), that explains much more about different types of allergies.
How The Allergy Test Kits Work:
You decide how many foods you would like to have tested and you purchase the kit, which will be mailed to you, along with instructions. The cost of the kit is dependent on how many foods you choose to be tested (see lists below). You then take the kit to a specific lab in your area that handles these tests, where your blood sample will be taken, processed, and sent to the ALCAT laboratory. The usual fee for the blood draw and preparation ranges from $10 to $45, and you pay the blood-drawing lab directly. While the $45 may sound high, it usually includes a mobile blood-draw person coming to your location at your convenience to obtain the blood sample and prepare it. The ALCAT does not require a “fasting” blood sample, so these can be done any time of day.
In about 2 weeks, you will receive, in the mail, a booklet with your results and the ALCAT phone number which you can then call for a consultation (no additional fee) that explains your results, guides you about how to modify your diet, and answers your questions.
An additional consultation (phone or in-person) with Dr. Blaich is recommended if you want to review your results and correlate them with other tests and concerns you may have about specific health conditions. This consultation is optional, and can be arranged by calling Dr. Blaich’s Denver office at 303-399-5117. You will learn about fees and scheduling, and will be instructed to complete a health symptom form and to send other tests to the office, if you want them reviewed in your consultation.
Here is a sample ALCAT result, showing how foods are rated as “no reaction” (green), “mild reaction” (yellow), “moderate reaction” (orange), or “severe reaction” (red). Remember that the reaction is a measurement of how your white blood cells reacted to each specific food.
In choosing the number of foods for your ALCAT panel, understand that the more foods are tested, the larger will be your “green list” of foods that do not trigger an adverse immune reaction or inflammation in your body.
